Perù is huge and the Andes are high! To move from the Canon del Colca to Puno on the Lake Titicaca our guide E. had to drive for 6 hours on the Carretera Interoceanica, passing the highest point at 4910 m on the Cordillera. And while E. drove we chatted, sang, played old songs o the radio and made new musical projects.
It was also our first experience with coca leaves, that E. continuously chewed to stay alert during the long drive: apparently coca leaves are good for everything, or so they say in this corner of the world! In my case, the high was close to that of a double expresso, just slightly more fun (but I still prefer the taste of coffee). And I really find puzzling me how in Perù coca leaves can be legally bought and consumed, but obviously their use to produce cocaine is highly illegal. How do they reconcile that? E.’s explanation were not really that convincing…
